Fire burns and blisters your skin
So you jump into the sea to save yourself
Because drowning is safer than the flames
Because pushing everything down is safer than feeling
Because every step is agony and you can’t stop the pain
Feel nothing at all so the pain can’t destroy you
Be numb
Because the pain of feeling is too much to bear
Be silent
Because crying out makes it real again
Swim deeper
No
Don’t let it happen again
Don’t let yourself be caught, dragged up onto the butchers block, and skinned, and cut and filleted into a million pieces
Swim deeper
Until all you can see is darkness
All you can feel is the pressure around you hugging you close
All you can hear is the crushing silence
The darkness is blinding, the pressure cracks your bones and the silences is deafening
But the flames up above feel a thousand times worse than drowning
Because even with the promise of joy and happiness and laughter it’s not with the risk of pain
Because it’s not safe up above
Because once you thought you were safe and piece by piece they cut you away
Took everything and made it ugly
Made memories into nightmares
Made laughter into screams that no one could hear
Love became fear and safety a lie
Swim deeper
Where no one can hold you, but no one can hurt you
Because you can’t trust anyone
Because anyone could be holding that butchers knife behind their back
